Resources for Waitlisted Students

If You’re Waitlisted Here Are Some Resources to Help You Decide What to Do Next At the end of the college admissions process most students expect a clear â€Å"yes† or â€Å"no† answer on their application, so receiving a waitlist decision can be an extremely confusing result. If you’re waitlisted, there are a number of resources out there to help you decide whether to take your chances on the waitlist or move on. Why Waitlisted? In the end, it’s all about numbers. Colleges are trying to build well-rounded classes, and with more students applying to more colleges than ever before, it’s getting harder and harder for colleges to predict just how many of the admitted students will enroll. Colleges have been growing their waitlists for years to account for this uncertainty – if they don’t reach their enrollment goals with the admitted students they can make up for it by admitting students off the waitlist. It’s not an entirely fair process, as it can leave many students with false hope and delay their excitement for where they’re going in the fall. After all, waitlist admit rates are very low. However, for some students on the cusp, it’s a good chance to make a case for why that college is a good-fit and get another chance at admission to their dream college. Should I Stay or Should I Go? If you’re waitlisted, first decide if you want to stay on the list. A waitlist decision can end up being a gut-check – maybe not getting in is a sign that you don’t want to be there in the first place. Or it can energize students to get excited about the colleges to which they were admitted. If you decide to decline the waitlist spot, let the college know and continue with choosing among your acceptances. If you decide to remain on the waitlist, here are some resources on what to do next. What are Your Chances of Getting Off the Waitlist?
